Gua Sha
( pronounced Gwahshah)
A technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
It is also known as spooning, coining or scraping.
It is awesome.
Gua Sha
Gua sha involves scraping over your skin with a massage tool.
I use a variety of beautiful tools like jade, rose quartz, bone and medical stainless steel.
It is one of my favourites TCM treatments because I see amazing results from it.
How does Gua sha work?
2 Reasons:
Qi (chi) or energy
Your body has energy lines called meridians, when the energy or Qi (Chi) gets blocked it can cause, pain, stiffness and illness. I scrape along these lines to help to improve the flow of energy which then helps the area to function properly.
Blood
In Traditional Chinese Medicine we believe that your blood can stagnate. When the blood stagnates you experience pain. By scraping over the area of pain we can help to improve the blood flow again and this reduces pain.
.
Please note that Gua Sha may leave temporary red / purplish / brown marks on your skin called petechia. The colour of the petechia gives me an indication what is happening in this area of your body. This is normal and will go after a few days.

Is it going to be painful
In areas where you are no physical problems it feels lovely. Where you have something going on, like blocked Qi, stagnated blood etc it may feel tender. I do my very best to ensure that you I listen to you and if at any time it feels too tender I reduce the technique or stop.
